We looked at each other.
"She fucking knows!" His face was turning purple. "And I don't believe that she wouldn't tell other people."
"She might." I didn't know how to play this. I wasn't worried about her snitching. I think she actually enjoyed being in on the secret. I, personally wouldn't tell her a damn thing - but I needed to calm this fool down. "Who would believe her?"
"Who wouldn't?"
He was right. Was our affair about to be on blast at work?
It was bad enough we took chances fucking in our classrooms after work. It was only by luck that we hadn't been caught flat out by the janitorial staff. We'd had some serious close calls throughout the years and had gotten real savvy with it. But then things took a turn for the worse last week.
Olin came to room after work trying to explain why we needed to rekindle our "friendship". I wasn't feeling him at first, but slowly, I allowed the charm that always caught me up to get to me. Next thing I knew, I had him straddled in my chair, going for broke. And next thing we both knew, we heard keys in my classroom door.
I couldn't get up fast enough, but it was too late. The counselor, Ann, had already caught a glimpse of our positioning. Not to mention the undies dangling off of my left leg.
"Uh..uh...oh wow...I'll come back later", she stuttered and backed out the door like she had seen a ghost. I looked down at Olin - the moment was gone. We composed ourselves all the while he whispered expletives, and high-tailed it out of the room to see how quickly the story spread.
Ann was back in her office, at her desk looking as if nothing had happened. Her office mate, Pam, was also seemingly deep into something on the screen of her laptop. Neither of them flinched as we came in the office. I broke the silence.
"Ann, did you need to see me about something?"
"Oh yes, just please make sure your students sign in for tutoring this week. Last week we had several we couldn't account for."
"Not a problem."
"Thanks."
I looked over at Pam. Still no movement. It was enough to make me walk behind her to see what she was looking at, but I was more interested in getting out of there. Olin backed up so I could close the door. We stood there for a minute, but didn't hear any conversation start between them.
"Come on, let's go", he said and pulled me toward his class across the hall. We would not have gotten caught there since no after school activities took place in his room. I was so pissed, I was steaming.
"You know what? This entire situation would not be a problem if you weren't such a fucking liar and a cheat!"
"What?"
"Yes, I said it! I'm tired of being your fucking work wife, while you go home to the woman you're really married to."
"That's not fair."
"No, what's not fair is me being your scapegoat for an unhappy marriage all the time. And you know what? I'm the dumb one for constantly coming back. I'm out." I'm stormed out of his room before I could hear his response and booked it back to my classroom before tears came streaming down my face. I quickly packed up my belongings, gave the tutor a heads up about sign in and headed to the parking lot.
Of course, he was waiting for me.
"Baby, I'm sorry."
"So not your baby."
"OK fine. Clair, I'm sorry and you're right. It's not fair. It's just that I can't get you out of my system. When I'm with you nothing else compares." I rolled my eyes at this fool. Was he serious?
"What about wifey?"
"I've known her my entire life and I won't front, she is my best friend and I love her to death. But you are so much more than that. You're my friend and my lover. My support system. The only person who can put me at ease after a hard day. Shit, only we know what it's like to be at this school this long. And you can't say our friendship hasn't pulled you through some rough days. "
He had me there. Only educators can understand the world of educators, and at a school like ours, rough days were a part of the bargain. I looked into his eyes and tried to fight back a smile. I lost.
"You get on my fucking nerves. Call me tonight", I said and I headed to my car.
"I'm calling you now," he said and picked up his cell phone. I answered after I was in the car.
"What?"
"Shall I follow you to our spot?" I sighed. This shit was nauseating.
"Sure. Fine. See you in ten." I pulled out the lot and headed down Figueroa towards the Bonaventure. I was looking forward to watching the sunset from from the balcony of 1203.
